Daniel Quinn likens civilization to an aircraft that can’t fly, because it wasn’t designed in compliance with the laws of aerodynamics. The aircraft has been pushed off a high cliff, and the pilot deludes himself that he is flying, while in actuality, he is falling and will soon crash. He is able to maintain that delusion for a while because there is a delay between the action and the consequences.
